Question 1

How do I know whether it makes more sense to repair or replace my appliance?

Accepted Answer

A practical guideline involves comparing the appliance's overall age and physical condition against the cost of the repair. If a refrigerator or laundry unit is relatively young, has been properly maintained, and requires a single component replacement (like an igniter, drain pump, or fan motor), repairing is typically economical. If an older appliance exhibits multiple compounding issues or sealed system refrigerant leaks, replacement is often more sensible. Our technician will provide an honest assessment of component wear so you can choose what works best for your household.

Question 2

How can I tell if my refrigerator is truly failing or just needs maintenance?

Accepted Answer

True cooling failures usually involve temperatures rising steadily in both the fresh food and freezer compartments, continuous clicking noises from the rear compressor, or thick frost accumulating solely on the back interior wall. In contrast, basic maintenance issues include heavy dust coating the condenser coils beneath the unit, a door gasket that is not sealing completely, or temperature dials that were inadvertently adjusted. Checking and vacuuming coils is a safe initial step before assuming the compressor is failing.

Question 3

Why does my front-load washing machine develop a musty or sour smell?

Accepted Answer

Front-load washers use airtight rubber door seals and minimal water, which creates a warm, humid environment. Using excessive laundry detergent (especially non-HE formulas) or fabric softeners leaves a soapy residue on the outer wash tub and door bellows. Mold and mildew feed on this residue. To combat smells, wipe down the gray rubber door gasket after wash days, leave the door slightly ajar between cycles to allow airflow, clean the lower drain pump filter basket regularly, and run monthly hot wash maintenance cycles.

Question 4

How often should residential dryer exhaust vents be cleaned?

Accepted Answer

Residential dryer vents should typically be inspected and cleaned thoroughly at least once every year. Homes with large families, heavy laundry usage, or long exhaust runs with multiple elbows may need cleaning every six to nine months. Warning signs of a restricted vent include clothes taking multiple cycles to dry, the dryer cabinet becoming extremely hot to the touch during operation, or the exterior flapper barely opening while the dryer runs.

Question 5

Why is my dishwasher leaving white residue or cloudy film on glassware?

Accepted Answer

In the Las Vegas Valley, Southern Nevada tap water contains significant dissolved mineral content (calcium and magnesium). During high-temperature drying cycles, water evaporates and leaves mineral scale behind on dish surfaces. Using a commercial rinse aid, occasionally running a dishwasher cleaner or citric acid cycle, ensuring hot water is purged at the kitchen sink before starting the machine, and cleaning mineral scale from spray arm nozzles will help reduce white film.

Question 6

What causes an oven to bake unevenly or burn food on one side?

Accepted Answer

Uneven baking can stem from several factors: a weakened electric bake element that is not reaching full operating wattage, an oven temperature sensor probe that has drifted out of resistance calibration, a convection circulation fan that has seized, or an oven door that does not close completely due to worn hinges. Visually checking the bake element during a preheat cycle can confirm if the entire element is glowing evenly.

Question 7

Why is my refrigerator ice maker making tiny, hollow, or misshapen cubes?

Accepted Answer

Ice cube size directly correlates with water fill pressure and flow volume. If water volume into the ice mold is insufficient, the resulting cubes will be tiny, crescent-shaped, or hollow. Common causes include a restricted reverse osmosis or inline water filter cartridge, a partially closed saddle shutoff valve under the sink, or mineral scale restricting the water inlet valve solenoid.

Question 8

Why does my washing machine shake violently or 'walk' across the floor during the spin cycle?

Accepted Answer

Violent vibration during high-speed spinning is commonly caused by an unbalanced laundry load (such as a single heavy bath towel mixed with lightweight items), unlevel leveling feet that allow the cabinet to rock diagonally, or worn suspension shock absorbers and balance springs inside the washer frame. Ensuring the machine is level on all four contact points is the first thing to check.

Question 9

Can high summer heat in a Las Vegas garage damage a refrigerator or freezer?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Most residential refrigerators are engineered to operate in ambient room temperatures between 55°F and 90°F. When summer garages in Las Vegas reach 110°F to 130°F, the condenser cannot effectively release heat absorbed from inside the cabinet. The compressor must run almost continuously, thermal overload protectors trip, and cooling performance drops significantly. Keeping garage units clean and ensuring proper clearance around coils helps reduce heat strain.

Question 10

Why does my gas range top burner click continuously after being cleaned?

Accepted Answer

Continuous clicking after cleaning is almost always caused by liquid cleaner or water getting trapped inside the spark ignition switch or around the ceramic spark electrode. Moisture allows low-voltage current to ground out, triggering the spark module. Turning the burner knobs off, unplugging the range, and allowing the cooktop burner heads to thoroughly dry out for several hours will often resolve the issue.

Question 11

What should I do if my garbage disposal is humming but the blades will not spin?

Accepted Answer

A humming disposal indicates the electric motor is receiving power but the shredder ring or impellers are mechanically jammed by a hard object (such as a bone, fruit pit, or utensil). Turn off the power switch immediately to prevent motor burnout. Never put your hand inside the disposal. A 1/4-inch hex allen wrench inserted into the center breaker socket on the very bottom of the unit can often manually rotate the flywheel back and forth to dislodge the obstruction.

Question 12

What information should I have ready when scheduling an appliance repair?

Accepted Answer

Having the appliance brand name, the approximate age, and the exact model and serial numbers (found on the manufacturer data rating sticker on the door frame or cabinet) is helpful. It is also beneficial to note specific symptoms, error codes displayed on the digital control screen, or any unusual sounds or leaks you have observed.
